Beyond that there is, as another teacher put it, a general, almost shocking, disengagement with technology, as it if it is irrelevant, and beyond gaming, uninteresting. These kids’ technological worldview is almost entirely text-message based: They bought texting plans and used them until they ran out; they asked to submit class assignments from their “sidekicks,” and they struggled to type on a standard computer because their digital dexterity was thumb-based. They didn’t grasp the concept of keyboard shortcuts, or the intricacies of Internet searches or ranking the authority of links.
